Washer & Dryer Issues You Should Never Ignore

It’s not just your dryer vents you need to keep an eye on when it comes to your laundry room. There are several other issues that may occur with your washer and dryer that you should be sure to address as soon as you notice them. Take a look at a few common occurrences you should NEVER ignore!

When it comes to your dryer, it’s not just the vents and lint trap you should keep an eye on. You should also take notice of your dryer door’s seal. The door of your dryer gets slammed shut a lot and over time the seal on the door can wear down resulting in heat leaking out, which in turn causes the dryer to generate even more heat to make up for that. The good news is seals are easy to replace!

You should also keep an eye on whether your dryer is actually rotating or not. That’s its main job to tumble the laundry about, so if your dryer has quit doing that you have an issue. A belt might have moved or started slipping which means it will need to be replaced.

How often do you take a look at the hoses connected to your dryer? These need to be checked periodically as wear and tear to them can cause big problems. For example, if the drain hose has started to erode, it could cause major water damage. Signs to look for on hoses include blisters, bumps and discoloration.

There are several things you should always address right away when it comes to your washing machine as well. A big one is how water acts inside the machine. If your washing machin has stopped filling up the way it used to, it could be the result of a variety of problems - anything from the hose to the faucets to the filter to the inlet valve or even the water control unit. Plus, if your washer isn’t emptying fully and you’re finding water left in the drum it could be the result of a drainage issue or blockage and should be checked out ASAP.

If you’re taking clothes out of the washer (or the dryer for that matter) and notice a “hot” smell, it’s likely your machine is getting TOO hot. For washers, it could be sign that you’re overloading the machine - something that causes components to wear down faster which in turn causes more friction which leads to overheating. It’s important to make sure you’re following your machine’s load capacity as well as waiting a few minutes in between loads of laundry to help prevent this.

Ever hear an occasional squeaking noise when you’re doing laundry? It may not be mice! Check to see if that squeaking is actually coming from your washing machine. If it is, it’s likely parts of the machine have started rubbing together due to the oil lubricating these parts drying up. And THAT can lead to big expensive problems down the road.

Your laundry room is a big help but it can also be something that leads to costly repairs. Keeping an eye on these things will save you money and time in the long run!
